Start year 2011 End year 2014 Funding (€) € 473,427 Website http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Default.aspx?Menu=Menu&Module=More&Location=None&Completed=2&ProjectID=17675 Summary It has been estimated that between one and two million people go sea angling in the UK, yet there is very little information on how many fish of each species are retained or released alive each year by anglers fishing on the shore and from private or charter boats. The commercial and recreational fishing sectors will benefit from having healthy and productive fish resources off our coasts, and a major challenge is how to achieve this whilst addressing the specific needs of both sectors.
A key element of this process is having comprehensive data on fishing activities, catches and economic value for all types of fishing. A project has therefore been set up to estimate recreational fishing activity and catches in England in 2011-12 using internationally-established survey methods, to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the different methods, and to estimate the contribution of sea angling to the regional and national economy of England. The surveys will also provide estimates of catches of species such as cod, bass and sharks that are mandatory under EU legislation.
Goals:
1. To provide information on recreational sea angling activity and economic value in England to allow the Government to make balanced and properly-informed decisions on management for sustainable development of all forms of sea fishing around our coasts.
2. To carry out surveys of recreational sea angling to meet EU legal requirements.
3. To provide sea angling bodies with useful information to allow them to develop their own views and policies.
4. To provide the new Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs) with a project framework to help them develop policies on sea angling along their coasts, as well as demonstrating collaboration
