Start year 2001 End year 2007 Funding (€) € NA Website NA Summary Population dynamics of the demersal fish stocks of cod, saithe, haddock, whiting, redfish, Greenland halibut, plaice and sole in the North Sea and North Atlantic are estimated through international collaboration using research survey based indices. Survey data bases are analysed in comparison with data derived from commercial catches and used in short and long term prediction models for stock size and yield, which are formulated by working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF). Such work forms the basis for scientific management advice in the framework of the European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), which is part of commitments of sustainable exploitation of marine living resources of the North Atlantic (NEAFC, NAFO). The scientific advice considers optimum production of the resources as part of healthy marine ecosystems comprising diverse species and stock structures. Such advice enables the development of sustainable exploitation strategies also to ensure balanced access of future generations of fishermen and consumers to productive marine protein resources.
