Start year 2013 End year 2015 Funding (€) € 180,000 Website NA Summary The Observatory of biodiversity aims to review and deepen the current knowledge of the species and habitats present in Sicily with several and different levels of intervention.
Goals:
(1) Processing of the acquired data and their cartographic elaboration (GIS); (2) Preliminary survey of current knowledge on regional biodiversity; (3) Monitoring of habitat, megafauna and megaflora of APM Sicilian; (4) Study of the effects of climate change and other types of human impact on habitats and species; (5) Notification of new alien species; (6) Creation of an Early Warning System (alien species, toxic or poisonous , stinging jellyfish or toxic algae); (7) Studies of interspecific and ecosystem biological diversity in extreme environments; (8) Study of human impact (wrecks, underwater weapons , offshore structures) on biodiversity; (9) Updating of knowledge and its integration into the information system SINA - SIRA - SIARPAS - Biodiversity data and information processing and presentation of results at national and international initiatives; (10) Implementation of strategies for communication, information and environmental education activities in support of the Observatory.
