The aim of this project was to provide a management tool for the planning of fish farm establishment and monitoring. Up to now, the state of the art allowed fish farming activity to take place mainly in semi-enclosed basins and coastal areas that are protected from severe weather phenomena. As Greece is one of the main producers of farmed fish in the Mediterranean basin there are concerns about conflict of fish farming activities with other coastal zone uses. Coastal zone areas are deemed of special importance and thus demand management proposals that consider the coastal zone in a holistic way. The suggested management tool will assist with decision making, taking into account the characteristics of the area. There will be exchange of knowledge between Greece and Cyprus and efforts will be made to develop common methodologies and cooperation on issues of environmental management. (1) To support the interregional cooperation between the main marine research bodies in Greece and Cyprus specializing in the marine environment and it's interactions with aquaculture; (2) To create novel procedures for management and spatial planning of aquaculture facilities; (3) Transfer of know how in aquaculture-environment interactions and management systems; (4) To inform interested parties and users in Greece and Cyprus.
