Summary Today, aquaculture is virtually non-existent in Flanders, but worldwide a rapidly growing industry of billions. Nevertheless, Flanders has many industrial and academic knowledge players in the aquaculture value chain. The transition from fishing and traditional aquaculture to integrated aquaculture, which is currently taking place, creates major business opportunities, also for Flemish companies. AQUAVALUE aims to draw up a roadmap for integrated aquaculture for Flanders, so that the expertise available in Flanders can be optimally valorised. The ultimate goal of this roadmap exercise is to define a number of promising pilot projects in consultation with all relevant actors in Flanders. During the project period of 12 months (1 October 2014 – 30 September 2015) the following project objectives will be pursued: 1) Mapping the state of the art with regard to (integrated) aquaculture (on Flemish/Belgian, European and world level); 2) determining value chain analysis and marketing potential of integrated aquaculture production for Flanders (both the end products and the required technology, services and knowledge); 3) Identification and quantification of the innovation potential with regard to integrated aquaculture production for Flanders (both the end products and the required technology, services and knowledge). Technical/economic definition of 2-4 pilot projects. The implementation of this roadmap project will be done through a combination of desktop research, individual and group interviews and interactive workshops with relevant actors in Flanders. The project will be supported by a Flemish, strongly industry-driven consortium (8 companies, 2 knowledge centers and 1 sector organisation) that covers a large part of the value chain.
