Aquaculture is a growing industry worldwide. Salmon and trout are the main species for fish aquaculture in Norway, but both governmental and industry interests have put focus on Atlantic cod in order to be a future commercial aquaculture species. A further increase in intensive aquaculture will require an increased supply of high quality protein and oil sources and it is a focus to find alternative feed sources to fish meal and fish oil. Plant sources that are used are lacking long chain fatty acids, particular EPA and DHA, and it is a need to find new sources for especially marine lipids. interesting source is culture of marine microalgae. Knowledge about the function of microalgae as feed for fish is necessary before planning and designing of mass production of microalgae. In this project the feasibility of using marine microalgae for fish feed will be investigated. The project will focus the activity of testing nutrient digestibility, growth and health aspects effects in important aquaculture fish species when fed with diets added microalgae. The research group in this project will constitute of researchers from SINTEF Fisheries and aquaculture, UMB, APC (Aquaculture Protein Centre) -UMB, Akvaforsk and NTNU. The research activity will be organized in 5 interactive/interdisciplinary work packages: WP 1: Characterize species- and environmental conditions for lipid and polyunsaturated fatty acid production in microalgae WP2: Produce sufficient amounts of microalgae for testing as feed component for salmo n and cod WP3: Characterize the digestion properties of microalgae in fish WP4: Study the effect of replacement of fish meal and fish oil with different microalgae on growth and quality of salmon and cod WP5: Examine if inclusion of microalgae in feed may have effect on the health status of salmon and cod
