Summary The ASSIST project is designed to generate the evidence that will facilitate the successful implementation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy; end the wasteful practice of discarding; prevent avoidable economic impacts; and facilitate engagement of the fishing industry during this process.
The project will generate the scientific evidence that will facilitate the successful implementation of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) with regard to the land all catch policy. Support Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in meeting the objective to minimise the practice of discarding. It will facilitate engagement with the fishing industry during the reformed CFP implementation period (2014-2018). It will prevent avoidable economic impacts from CFP implementation and will assist the fishing industry in maximising revenue. The project will adopt a systematic approach that will identify and address the priority areas for the fishing industry in adapting to the new CFP. It will link the policy and operation changes associated with the reduction of unwanted catches with the delivery of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and Marine Protected Areas/Marine Conservation Zones monitoring.
