The size of the fish in the catch is important information for the fishermen. It usually affects the selling price, and in addition, in many fisheries there are rules for the minimum permitted size. Mainly, the fish size is identified in a late phase of the catch, often only when the fish is pumped on board. Identification of fish size before capture will make fishing more efficient and sustainable. In this project we will develop and test a system for measuring the size distribution of herring and mackerel under commercial conditions. Main objective: To develop and test a concept for size estimation of pelagic fish in commercial fishing using broadband sonar. Sub-goals: 1. To adapt and test a narrow-beam broadband sonar to the submersible keel on board F/F GO Sars and M/S Libas. 2. To collect data to test methods for estimating the length distribution of fish in shoals of herring. 3. To collect data to test methods for estimating the length distribution of fish in shoals of mackerel. 4. To assess the accuracy of the estimated size distribution of herring and mackerel. 5. To facilitate the continuation of the concept into a commercial product.
