The main objective of the study was to validate (test) a reproduction model for salmon lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis , by investigating whether a connection was found between hatching and abundance (incidence per fish) of adult female lice in the cage. To achieve this, lice were collected from localities that had not been chemically treated against salmon lice in the same year and that had low lice levels. The sensitivity and specificity of field diagnostics of fertilization of salmon lice where investigated so that the veterinarian or breeder could check fertilization on the edge of the cage himself.
