Summary The goal of MonitorShrimp is to digitally record and evaluate the behavior of shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) in order to significantly increase animal welfare, animal health and operational safety in land-based breeding. MonitorShrimp will conserve resources, substantially increase the efficiency of shrimp production and improve its profitability. The targeted innovation from MonitorShrimp is a digital technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze in real time the data from specially installed cameras and hydrophones as well as standard sensors for water quality in land-based breeding systems for shrimp. It is able to inform the farmer at any time about the actual biomass of its system and its condition. The technology will enable qualitative and quantitative assessments of the condition of the entire livestock population via detection algorithms for image and sound, an analysis algorithm that compares the metadata with a database on shrimp behavior and biology, and via an interface provide the data for interpretation to the breeder on a smartphone / tablet or computer. This continuous monitoring, allows the farmer for the first time to operate, feed and take other necessary measures based on the actual biomass and its condition. This will increase animal welfare, improve animal health, increase feed and protein efficiency by 25-30%, reduce wastewater pollution with nutrients and the amount of solid waste generated by at least 20%, thus reducing the ecological footprint and conserving resources. At the same time, the efficiency of production is significantly increased, since a higher yield is achieved with the same or less use of funds. The development of MonitorShrimp thus leads to a paradigm shift in land-based shrimp breeding.
