"Despite growing interest in the seafood industry, there is a limited amount of knowledge about what skills the industry will need in the future, including how many candidates are needed in various professional areas. In NHO's competence barometer for 2020 (Rørstad et al., 2021) state that 6 out of 10 member companies in the national association for the fisheries and aquaculture industry (Seafood Norway) have unmet skills needs. The need for specialist expertise in engineering and technical subjects, primary business subjects, craft subjects and social and legal subjects is particularly great. However, these areas of expertise are broadly defined, and the specific needs are thus somewhat unclear. Knowledge about dimensioning the competence needs also seems to be deficient. Based on this, the FHF wants to provide knowledge about the skills needs of the seafood industry for the future, as well as knowledge about the number of candidates per skill area that is needed. Main objective: To map and quantify future skills needs among a wide selection of companies in the whole seafood industry (not including supplier companies) - skills needs that the seafood industry considers necessary for further development and to solve the challenges of the future. Sub-goals: 1. To define the seafood industry, including which criteria should be used as a basis for including / excluding companies in the population. 2. To establish probable future scenarios in the seafood industry and define the framework for a survey of future skills needs. 3. To produce a knowledge base that describes and quantifies the future competence needs of the seafood industry. The survey has revealed: • that the need for skills in the seafood industry is wide-ranging/not uniform • that the need for skills is not equally distributed between the business groups • that the prevalence of recruitment problems and unmet skills needs is large • a need for recruitment in various professional fields • that the demand for skills in financial and administrative subject; science subjects, craft subjects and technical subjects; and primary food subjects are greatest • that candidates with competence from vocational upper secondary education and vocational school are most sought after • that the seafood industry has a marked need for managers • that changes in the environment (geopolitical, framework conditions) can have an impact on the seafood industry's skills needs • that the need for recruitment is greatest in the aquaculture industry , measured as the average number of candidates per company • that there is a particular need to recruit candidates for primary industry occupations and process and machine operators."
