Safe and efficient operation and management of sea-based aquaculture farms requires an overall and updated information about the marine installations, the state of the fish and the production environment. This information is difficult to achieve, and in many cases not possible, as existing technology and methods have many shortcomings and is demanding in use. Hence, new technology that render possible online reporting of the state in each single sea cage is required for efficient optimization of production and decision-making. The project idea "CageDrone" addresses these requirements using a resident and autonomous vehicle in each cage for surveillance of the cage volume and structures. The concept consists of an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle), an underwater docking station for battery charging and data transfer and a land based centre for analysis and presentation of the acquired data from the different cages. The CageDrone will be used to collect sensor data from the full cage volume, and main tasks will be inspection of plant structures, monitoring of production environment, fish behaviour and condition. The technology will be relevant for existing open cages, future exposed construction and closed sea based cages. The pre-project will focus on prioritization of relevant application areas, define objectives and research tasks and establish a consortium with the required competence.
