The project involves production of freshwater by reverse osmosis (RO) of seawater, on site. RO is a process in where seawater is high-pressure filtrated. Until now, well boats are used for transportation of fresh water from shore to the fish farming site and the fish are treated onboard. The well boat capacity is not sufficient for ongoing freshwater treatment, so alternative sustainable solutions are important. To succeed with freshwater treatment of parasite in Norway, the main challenge will be in logistics, operation and handling of large amounts of fresh water. In addition, the quality of the fresh water is essential to ensure efficient treatment (salinity, calcium, magnesium content, etc.). The production technology is well established, but never been used at a fish farming site. Challenges related to the placement of RO-plant at existing infrastructure, challenges with anchoring, whether it should be possible to move the RO within the fish farm, or between different localities. Moreover, one must define a reasonable production capacity of the RO plant in relation to the cost of the RO-plant, storage and emergency needs. Storage of freshwater is an important research topic. In this project, the focus will be on two possible solutions; storing in an enclosed flexible cage bag, and storage on board a barge. Storage of the produced freshwater in closed flexible cage bags involves many challenges with regard to contamination by saltwater, preservation of water quality, mooring system, environmental forces on the bag due to currents, waves and the density difference between the surrounding saltwater and freshwater in the bag etc. Density difference example; the freshwater level within the bag will be 32 cm higher than outside if the salinity of seawater outside the bag is 32 ppt with a temperature of 8 °C, for a cage bag with circumference of 120 m with spherical shape (volume = 15,100 m3). The final challenge is how to bring salmon and freshwater together.
