The blue economy is a resource with enormous expansion potential for Italy. At the same time, the protection of the quality of the marine environment is a specific responsibility of our country not only for the conservation of biotic and abiotic resources, but also for the development possibilities of blue tourism. The ITEM project was born from the awareness of serious deficiencies in technological innovation that they risk to limit sustainable development of the marine economy. ITEM brings together a community made up of 50 research realities, universities, small and medium-sized enterprises and large industries who will work in this way integrated to: 1) identify the main technological gaps and opportunities for industrial development country's competitiveness; 2) develop industrial research by testing new technologies patented by project partners; 3) to design new technologies useful to improve the observation systems needed a ensure the quality of the marine environment; 4) design new technologies for useful production systems the sustainable use of marine biotic and abiotic resources; 5) design biotechnologies useful for environmental remediation and the identification of new products, foods, materials and pharmaceuticals of origin navy. The innovation of marine research in Italy promoted by ITEM will help create tools for economic and social growth based on the sustainable use of resources and the opportunities offered from the blue economy. With the ITEM project, Italy aspires to become one of the leading countries at the level in the research and development of next generation marine technologies and biotechnologies in capable of ensuring environmental quality, entrepreneurial development and new employment opportunities based on the "sea resource".
