Fish oils are renowned for containing healthy omega3 fatty acids. The most well described are the long chained poly-unsaturated omega3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. There is a market for omega3 oils in a large variety of products from foods to supplements and pharmaceuticals. Epax is a leading producer of omega3 concentrates and is active in research and development. A new type of omega3 fatty acids are in focus for this project. New processes for concentration and analysis of the fatty acids will be developed. An important part of the project is to examine biological functions and health effects of these new omega3 fatty acids. Studies in various cell types have already started and studies in animals are in planning phase. NOFIMA is our R&D partner in the project and has responsibility for studies in selected cell models.
