The FEEDDOME project will develop a combination of the technologies air dome, net roof and underwater feeding units for cage farming of salmon. Such new farming system will minimize sea lice infestation and other surface-related challenges and make salmon farming more sustainable and may open for increased production. The key challenges are: to find out how large air dome is needed for the salmon to use the artificial surface for swim bladder filling, test underwater feeding as suitable feeding method, design and test function of the combined system in medium- and large-scale, and ultimately prove that salmon in the system is normal in relation to production efficiency, behaviour and welfare. The partners consist of leading technology and net supplier with commercial farmers and internationally renowned research organizations. The research has begun with experiments in middle scale and commercial pilot trials. The first step is to develop, build, test and adapt the artificial surface (air dome) and net-roof to satisfy salmon behavioural needs. In parallel, the underwater feeding system will be further developed and verified for use in cages with acceptable welfare and production efficiency. The second step is to test the whole system in deep water. Third step is to test a prototype repetitively in commercial scale. Fourth step is to document the suitability of several complete systems during prolonged commercial production of salmon.
