Salmon lice in the aquaculture industry are a serious environmental problem that threatens wild salmon and trout stocks, reduces animal welfare for farmed salmon, increases infections, diseases and reduces growth. Measures against salmon lice cost the industry NOK 3-5 billion annually in Norway and are on the rise. Salmon lice have become more resistant to traditional medicines, and this has led to a sharp increase in doses, which in turn has reduced the sensitivity to the chemical methods. An important measure against salmon lice is to reduce the lice infestation. For this, there are solutions based on covering breeding cages with lice skirts, but the problem with these is that they reduce the water flow and thus the oxygen level in the cage. This leads to reduced growth and animal welfare. In addition, they do not remove the infection pressure in the sea. This project will bring to market a lice trap that will be able to reduce surcharges and remove infection pressure in geographical areas. The lice infestation is reduced, without adversely affecting the water flow. In the project, we will construct a lice trap, test it in a tank, make adjustments in the construction based on experience, and then test it first at IMR's facility at Austevoll, and then at a commercial fish farm. The project involves fish farmers and suppliers with a long career in the fishing and aquaculture industry. The commercial potential is significant with a total contribution margin for Norway's 600 fish farms of NOK 504 million. The concept will be commercialized, and partners will carry out production, installation and service for the customer. It ensures good competence and rapid capacity building. The project has great societal benefits and high commercial value.
