In the autumn of 2007, it was proven that two of Marine Breed's broodstock groups of cod in Møre og Romsdal were infected with Francisella. Although Francisellosis is still not a notifiable disease under the Food Act and it was unknown whether it can be transmitted from parent fish to offspring, Marine Breed routinely implemented information to customers as well as some preventive measures such as double disinfection and testing of eye eggs before delivery. None of the deliveries tested positive for Francisella. In late autumn 2007, however, restrictions were imposed on broodstock populations. All distribution of eye roe was stopped by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority at the regional office in Steinkjer. At this time, VESO was engaged as Marine Breed's professional advisor in the case. In the expectation that the necessary legal basis for restrictions would soon be adopted, VESO and Marine Breed launched an R&D project to, if possible, save the genetic progress that lies in the spawning stock, and at the same time to generate new scientific knowledge about vertical infection with Francisella.
