Summary Infection testing is today the only method for testing whether vaccines provide adequate protection in fish. However, this method is controversial as it causes large consumption of experimental animals and a painful death for the animals included in the experiment. In warm-blooded animals, mostly in vitro models are used for testing vaccines. A blood sample is then taken from the animals at a given time after vaccination and the level of antibodies against the agent (s) in question is measured in serum / plasma. You can then divide the blood sample and measure antibodies against many agents on one and the same animal (which is very relevant for fish where it is vaccinated with 6 agents in the same vaccine)
Often the time it takes to have an infection test performed is 10-12 weeks, with this model this time can be shortened down to half the time, we believe. But the model must be tested and validated to see if there is a correlation between the level of antibody after vaccination and the protection the vaccines obtain in infection trials.
One PhD project was therefore started on 0 1.10.04 where the method will be tested on furunculosis vaccines for salmon. The project is a collaboration between VESO Vikan, Pharmaq, the Norwegian Veterinary College, the Veterinary Institute and Nord-Trøndelag University College, dept. Namsos. The financing of most of the costs (salary) is covered through RDA funds (Reduced Differentiated Employer Contribution Funds). But the various institutions contribute significantly beyond this to get the project completed. We have no coverage for the experimental costs, nor the production of sample e-vaccines and costs associated with the ELISA analyzes.
Study 1 in the project was started in the second quarter of 2005, but has not been completed yet. The ELISA analyzes have not been completed.
