Summary In order to gain control over salmon lice in a long-term perspective, it is important to look at all the measures in a total control strategy, and biological de-lice is highlighted as an important part of this strategy. There is now widespread use of cleaning fish as a continuous preventive measure against salmon lice, and around 50 million cleaning fish are released in Norway annually.
High mortality and loss of cleaner fish in salmon cages is among the biggest, if not the biggest, problem the aquaculture industry in Norway is now facing. Good fish welfare for all fish, both cleaner fish and salmon, is crucial for the industry's development. If the farming industry fails to reduce mortality and losses of cleaner fish throughout their life cycle on land and during use in salmon cages, which was estimated at 42% when used in cages in 2018–2019 (Stien et al., 2020), the days may be numbered for an otherwise gentle (for the salmon) and important tool for controlling salmon lice.
Main objective:
To survey the actual causes of mortality and loss of cleaner fish both in the hatchery phase and in the sea phase, as well as develop a handbook with guidance for assessing the quality of cleaner fish when released in cages.
Subgoals:
1. To uncover the causes of mortality in cleaner fish in the hatchery phase.
2. To document losses and causes of mortality in farmed cleaner fish after release into the sea.
3. To document losses and causes of mortality in wild-caught wrasse after release in cages.
4. To develop a guide for assessing the quality of cleaned fish before release into the sea.
5. To uncover, assess and prioritize further R&D needs to reduce mortality and loss of cleaning fish.
