Summary Norway has set a goal that the global average temperature should not increase more than 2 ° C from pre-industrial times. Researchers have identified this as a crucial threshold to avoid the most dramatic consequences of global warming. A Norwegian study published in the journal Climatic Change in June 2007 says the chance is 50 percent to avoid global warming above 2 ° C, provided that global emissions of greenhouse gases are cut by 80 percent from the year 2000 by 2050. At the same time, an increased energy demand in the world is expected in the decades ahead, especially in developing countries. In order to be able to reduce emissions by 80 per cent, this means in practice that virtually all use of fossil energy must either be replaced by renewable or emission-free energy solutions. With the project "Future emissions free ships", ZERO and DNV want to put the spotlight on this challenge in the shipping industry. ZERO and DNV will therefore establish a preliminary project where we can form the basis for a consortium and work out concrete work packages for the main project. DNV and Zero do not want to apply for a main project alone, but seek cooperation with shipowners, equipment suppliers etc. In the main project, ZERO and DNV will focus on both possible climate-friendly energy carriers to transport with renewable and emission-free fuel for the ship, but also look at new innovative solutions for future ship solutions for utilization of renewable energy resources at sea for propulsion and energy production. The pilot project is necessary to ensure broad anchoring in the shipping industry, supplier and shipyard industry. All these bodies are important if one is to carry out such a comprehensive project and it is a challenge and ready to gather all good forces.
