Summary Clean Water will develop ECO-technological solutions for removal of micro-pollutants and microplastic from contaminated water. Cost efficiency, as well as environmental friendliness will be compared with the removal data, taking literature into account and adapting new technical solutions to the Baltic Sea region. Continuous dialog and knowledge exchange will be performed in Stakeholder Fora including WWTP operators, managers and the participating companies.
Clean Water aims for reducing the input of xenobiotics and microplastic from wastewater into the Baltic Sea by exploring, developing and comparing innovative eco-technology approaches.
Clean Water will explore through selected experiments and calculations the dominant sources of xenobiotics and micro-pollutants from wastewater and stormwater (rainwater and combined sewer overflow), respectively. Clean Water will test removal technologies for selected hydrophilic (pharmaceuticals, etc.), lipophilic compounds (fragrances, flame retardants) as well as microplastics with different profiles in respect of matureness, energy demand and infrastructure profile. Innovative approaches for chemical oxidation, biofilm reactors, membrane bioreactors and biofilters will be tested and critical process parameters will be optimized. Adaptations of the respective stormwater treatment technologies will be performed. Innovative methods for testing for these compounds including metabolites and particles will be used and further developed.
