The project VitAl aims to develop behavioral welfare indicators for aquaculture of rainbow trout. An automated system based on RFID will be established and evaluated for its suitability in automated assessment of behavioral patterns and the early detection of behavioral signs of poor welfare. By means of controlled experiments the effects of two important parameters in fish husbandry, i.e. water quality and stocking density, will be evaluated with regard to the behavior, activity and swimming performance of the fish. The evaluation will be conducted by means of an automated RFID-system, visual observations and via SmartTags. The findings of the project shall help to derive behavioral indicators for welfare assessment on fish farms. The project shall further investigate, whether an automated system based on RFID may be used to detect behavioral signs of poor welfare automatically and whether this might serve as an alarm system for aquaculture practice.
