Summary Each aquaculture activity will only be successful if the complete life cycle of the cultivated organism is mastered. For certain fish species, including freshwater cod, the fish larvae exclusively feed on live prey in their early life stages. In aquaculture, during this phase, Artemia nauplii, the newly hatched larvae of brine shrimp, are typically used as feed. Only at a later stage can the young fish be transitioned to a commercial dry feed. This transition from live feed to dry feed is called "weaning" or "fostering". When the young fish has been fully transitioned to dry feed, it is referred to as fingerlings. The weaning process is a very critical phase where high mortality rates can occur (up to 80%). This makes the quality and supply of fingerlings unpredictable. Odisee is researching how the survival rate can be increased and how the quality of fingerlings can be improved. The latter is crucial for further rearing to market weight. With the support of the Financial Instrument for the Flemish Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (FIVA) and the European Fisheries Fund (EFF), Odisee has installed a hatchery at Aqua-ERF. In June 2014, the first fingerlings were produced here. Aqua-ERF aims to be self-sufficient in its need for experimental animals through the production of fingerlings, and also aims to make weaned fish available to interested breeders and entrepreneurs who want to start with this species.
