Autoimmunity as previously described by Koppang et al. (2008) is associated with the use of current commercial vaccines in Norwegian salmon farming. Five different commercial vaccines have been tested, but there was no difference between these measured in the degree of autoantibody or the degree of adhesions in the abdominal cavity. Individuals from all vaccine groups showed changes in the basement membrane of the glomeruli, but no such findings were made in unvaccinated fish. These findings, seen in the context of the detection of autoantibodies, are indicative of the condition of systemic autoimmunity. Goal: to investigate the current situation with regard to the occurrence of systemic autoimmunity in Norwegian farmed salmon, as well as to gain a greater understanding of a possible connection between autoimmunity and reduced growth, as well as lesions in the heart.
