Due to limited fish meal supply plant protein concentrates are commonly used in fish nutrition nowadays. Despite several antinutrive ingredients palatability of plant protein enriched diets can limit its utilization in sensitive fish species. Thus, aim of this study was the development of feed attractants based on Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis). Turbot was chosen as test model as previous studies indicate a specific sensitivity against plant proteins. Various experimental set ups were realized using mussel meal, mussel protein and mussel lipid extracts as attractants for diets containing rape seed proteins as main protein source. Based on observed feed intake, growth performance and health indicator in the various experiments, it could be concluded that mussel meal has highest potential to increase feed ingestion and growth performance of turbot. In contrast to mussel lipids, utilization of mussel protein showed comparable feed ingestion and fish performance potentials as mussel meal. Nevertheless, higher processing cost of mussel protein preferred mussel meal as effective feed attractant in nutrition of fish fed plant based diets.
