Summary There is a need for knowledge regarding the health of cleaner fish used in salmon cages for control of salmon louse, both in terms of data on survival after transfer to cages, and also in terms of causes of disease and mortality. Such an overview would make easier to implement preventive measures, both at the technological level, but also in terms of vaccine development. A necessary tool in vaccine development is reproducible challenge models of disease that can be used to test vaccine efficacy. This project aims to generate knowledge on cleaner fish health that will have practical application. It will systematically identify causes of mortality causes in cages, collect and characterize pathogens and develop challenge models against these for use in vaccine development . One will also create scientific publications that summarise current knowledge on cleaner fish health. This knowledge will make it possible to implement preventive measures in the short term. The project will also prepare the ground for vaccine development by identifying vaccine candidates and develop challenge models that can be used in vaccine development.
Goals:
(1) To collect and systematize data on health / mortality causes of cleaner fish in salmon cages, both infectious and non-infectious causes of death. Collection of diagnostic material for steps 2 and 3; (2) To identify potential vaccine candidates and develop challenge models in farmed ballan wrasse; (3) To identify potential vaccine candidates and develop challenge models in farmed lumpfish; (4) To collate existing knowledge about cleaning fish health in several publications.
