Summary Prevention and control of salmon lice is demanding and includes a wide range of costly measures, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. The use of cleaning fish is an extensive preventive measure with a clear advantage in that it is not stressful for the salmon and that it is relatively inexpensive. Clear disadvantages of using cleaner fish are that questions are raised about the cleaner fish's welfare in full-scale salmon cages and about the effectiveness of using cleaner fish for lice control.
In this project, an attempt will be made to document which conditions promote lice eating in cleaner fish. Furthermore, the project will provide better knowledge about the effectiveness of cleaning fish as a control measure against salmon lice. This will be achieved by carrying out experimental trials with studies of temperature-dependent evacuation rates of salmon lice from stomach contents, together with extensive sampling of stomach contents of cleaning fish included in the data bank on cleaning fish.
Main objective:
To identify influenceable factors that make lice eating more efficient in cleaning fish and calculate the achievable effect of using cleaning fish on control of salmon lice and barnacle lice under different conditions.
Sub-goals:
1. To further develop the data bank on cleaner fish with expansion of data with a spotlight on influenceable factors with an effect on lice eating and data documenting cleaner fish welfare.
2. To establish digestion times and temperature-dependent evacuation rates of eaten salmon lice in wrasse.
3. To analyze influencing factors on occurrences of salmon lice and barnacle lice in stomach samples of wrasse and roe bream, and calculate the effects of eating lice on lice control under different conditions.
4. To explore the effect of using cleaner fish at cage level under different conditions, through scenario simulation with a population model for salmon.
