The primary aim is to develop methodology for using echo sounder technology for appetite-led feeding of caged salmon (ECHOFEEDING). This will involve the following objectives: Establish optimal feeding intensities and echo sounder surveillance volumes (area and depth covered by transducer). Different feeding intensities (strength of fish feeding response), transducer beam widths and depth positions will be investigated. Conduct long-term deployment of ECHOFEEDING to assess the influence of increasing fish size, and changes in fish swimming depth relating to seasonal and environmental changes. Compare ECHOFEEDING with traditional manual batch feeding by evaluating feed intake, fish growth, sea lice infestation and fish behaviour. Use deviations between actual fed amount measured (by ECHOFEEDING) and predicted appetite as a continuous welfare indicator.
