The extrusion process is a complex system involving both physical and chemical variables. Better understanding of their impact on the final pellet quality requires new models of how the feed ingredients interacts in the melt before the extrusion process, during extrusion, and in the final expanded pellet. Fishmeal is a critical protein ingredient in aqua feed processing and has a significant impact on final pellet quality. Nofima has conducted extensive work to explore the relationship between fishmeal physicochemical properties and physical pellet quality. The knowledge from the studies can be transferred to new vegetable, single cell, and animal protein ingredients. The main objective of the project is to determine the impact of variation in protein physicochemical properties and process conditions in the extrusion cooking process used in fish feed manufacturing.
