Summary Salmon have lice in different numbers, and preliminary results show that the lice are randomly distributed according to a so-called Poisson distribution. This is the usual distribution for properties that can be counted in the form of individual particles or individuals. Lice have a sexual reproduction where female lice must mate to produce eggs / lice larvae. This means that there must be at least one lice of each sex on a fish for reproduction to take place. If it is assumed that lice have a sex distribution of 50/50, it is possible to create a mathematical model that determines how large a proportion of the lice population can reproduce. This can be important for understanding the threshold level that causes the lice population to grow into a single row, and one can with simple counts assess how far one can be away from such a threshold situation. The planned study is based on preliminary results that suggest that salmon lice actually follow such a probability distribution as expected. However, validation is needed when using larger datasets. Two empirical data sets were used as input data in a theoretical model for lice level and effect on reproduction. In the model, it turns out that the salmon lice's reproduction is not linear in relation to anthill female lice, and that at low lice levels a smaller proportion of female lice will reproduce. With an abundance of lice (abundance) of 0.5 adult female lice per fish, between 40% and 60% will reproduce. With low lice numbers, the uncertainty and variance in the number of lice per fish will become more important.
