The project aims to encourage the use of good practices in the management of waste from mussel farming, the research and development of recovery systems for the component made up of plastic material and subsequent methods of recycling and reuse. The actions put in place have favored the development of proposals to overcome the current limits in the management of this type of waste. The effects of the activities carried out by the project have fully met the expectations in terms of environmental sustainability for the shellfish farming sector, in particular: – the collaborative relationship between the production sector and the various waste managers was consolidated to start the recovery and recycling process of the plastic materials that form part of it; – an interesting proposal has been made for the management of special waste from mussel farming which foreshadows the possibility of managing this type of waste in a more simplified way, freeing operators from some bureaucratic obligations; – operating procedures have been identified for the management of mussel farming waste such as to facilitate its management on board and in the phases following delivery on land; – sector operators were involved through the Emilia-Romagna Mussel Farmers Consortium; – the transfer of the results to the various production realities present along the regional and national coast will help limit the dispersion of plastic waste by farmers.
