Hatchery technology for commercial production of glass eels will confer sustainability to the European eel aquaculture industry. ITS-EEL will advance emergent technology to breed European eel with the aim to scale-up offspring culture for future glass eel production. Recently, the consortium has raised European eel breeding from a state of reproductive failure to stable production of viable offspring, leading to feeding larval culture. ITS-EEL focuses on improving egg and larval quality through enhanced breeding protocols as well as increasing offspring survival and on-growing by designing and optimizing larval culture systems and diets. The goal is to establish protocols for glass eel production and develop a suite of targeted products that, in combination, provide the complete technology required for novel and innovative eel hatcheries. Together, this will generate opportunities for the aquaculture sector to exploit the extensive and profitable markets for eel aquaculture.
