In the Skogseid watercourse in Hordaland, mortality has been observed in hatcheries coinciding with high concentrations of diatoms, especially the species Asterionella formosa and Tabellaria fenestrata. We have, with the help of short-term exposure trials on a laboratory scale, investigated the tolerance of salmon fry for different concentrations of A. formosa. No mortality was observed in the experiment even though the concentrations to which the fry were exposed exceeded the concentrations to which the fish in the facilities had been exposed. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
