The winter sore problem in farmed salmon is not optimally prevented by current vaccines (2012). Every year, a number of direct losses of farmed salmon are registered in outbreak-like situations in the fish farms and in addition there are financial losses in the form of downgrading of slaughtered salmon. The project will provide a lack of knowledge about bacteria associated with winter sores and their interaction with the host. Increased insight into the factors that contribute to the development of winter sores is necessary to identify measures that can control the disease problem effectively. The project follows up the work in a previous Research Council project in the period 2006 to 2009. FHF's action plan for 2012 has a point “Strong and robust salmonids” where better survival in the sea phase is one of two main areas. The goal is loss reduction and increased survival through effective preventive measures. The project will help to increase knowledge about underlying mortality so that effective measures can be implemented in line with the FHF's action plan. The project is also aimed at increasing knowledge about the interaction between host and infectious agent.
