The aim of this project was to develop new technology for monitoring fish welfare in commercial sea cages. The project has advanced the technological development of two complementary systems: The Welfaremeter-system, developed by Institute of Marine Research, involves monitoring environmental parameters with on-line communication to a web-based fish welfare database for processing and analyses. The SmartTag-system, developed by Nofima marine and Thelma Biotel AS, involves using acoustic telemetry for measuring respiration in free-swimming fish as an indicator of welfare and stress. Next step is testing the integrated use of these systems in a commercial Atlantic salmon sea farm in 2010. Goals: • To develop an appropriate measurement tool for studying and acquiring knowledge about the connection between environmental data and fish welfare • To develop a long-term system for monitoring and documentation of aquaculture environment and fish welfare in commercial fish farms in Norway and abroad. In a simplified version of a total system, it will be possible to develop a simple system for monitoring and early warning of abnormal stress behavior in fish in the farming cage.
