It is claimed from various quarters that salmon and rainbow trout farming must be moved to closed floating facilities at sea or in land-based facilities. There are particular conditions regarding escapes, salmon lice and discharges of organic material / nutrients that are believed to be improved by moving farming in closed facilities. However, there is currently a lack of a knowledge base to be able to provide professionally based recommendations on whether farming in closed facilities in the short or long term can contribute to improving the relevant conditions. On the other hand, several players in the industry (fish farming companies and suppliers) have begun to investigate the possibilities of using closed solutions for parts of the production cycle. In addition, the authorities have demanded that de-lice take place in closed units from 1 January 2011, which will entail challenges related to conducting farming in closed units. FHF wants to contribute to the debate being conducted on a better knowledge base than today and wants to initiate work that contributes to this becoming possible. Goals: • To identify challenges and opportunities when using closed facilities. • To describe the content of any further work with closed facilities.
