The number of reported salmon individuals in Norwegian farms can be up to 464 million. Controlling the exact number of salmon throughout all stages of production - from vaccination to finished fish - is a demanding task with many stages. In many of the links, there are several environmental, organizational and operational factors that can have an impact on the accuracy of the control and counting of the number of fish. In a consultation statement from March 2021, changes have been proposed to the Aquaculture Regulations, with a proposal for a new § 37b requirement for accuracy for the number of fish. The proposal reads as follows: ""the number of fish in each production unit must be able to be specified at all times with an accuracy of less than ± 1%"". The requirement applies to salmon and rainbow trout. Main objective: To investigate what potential there is for accurate control of the number of salmon in the sea phase. Sub-goals: 1. To document the possible accuracy with today's available methods for controlling the number of salmon throughout production under realistic working conditions. 2. To map the degree of influence of important sources of error in the counting accuracy, both under controlled conditions and through normal work operations with a well boat. 3. To identify and evaluate which measures (organisational, technological and operational) can contribute to increased accuracy and/or complement the use of current technologies.
