Summary The breeders have initiated measures to prevent the hake from entering the net, they pick up dead fish almost continuously and must constantly inspect the net with the help of divers to check if there are holes. So far, it has not been possible to find methods, techniques or devices that keep the haw away from the facilities.
The project could have a major impact on the farming industry. Reducing or eliminating stickleback attacks at aquaculture installations leads to a reduced number of cases of holes in nets and salmon escapes. There are direct economic benefits to the industry related to reducing the number of cases of holes in the net through reduced repair costs and reduced salmon escapes. Escaped farmed salmon are a threat to the wild salmon population and reducing the risk of escape thus also has a positive effect on both the industry's reputation and the health of the wild salmon population. Pigghå is a red-listed species and the stock is under pressure. Keeping barbs away from breeding facilities will reduce mortality by preventing them from getting stuck in the nuts. The results of the project can also provide useful lessons in general about how attacks by shark species can be avoided. For the R&D community, the project will lead to new knowledge about the behavior of turbot, especially near offshore installations. The project will also provide knowledge on how preventive measures, technology and its degree of effectiveness should be evaluated.
Main objective:
To identify and document measures to avoid problems with barbs at breeding facilities.
Sub-goals:
M1. To provide a national and international knowledge base on relevant behavior of turbot in relation to aquaculture installations.
M2. To provide an overview of measures against barb attacks, and what experiences have been made.
M3. To carry out tests and documentation of measures that are considered most likely to be effective without killing the porcupine, based on M1 and M2.
