Technological advancements in unmanned underwater vehicles, for instance, high-resolution cameras, superior manipulator arms, and highly sensitive sonar have led to a reduction in the timelines and costs required to develop subsea vehicles, consequently opening an ocean of opportunities in the compact underwater drone market. During this project, we will develop REDRA - a resident autonomous underwater microdrone. REDRA will allow autonomous inspections of nets & tracking of environmental parameters. The REDRA system builds upon Hydromea portable autonomous and remote-controlled underwater drones with patented rim-driven hubless thrusters and precise electric motor controllers. To increase the value proposition of REDRA a charging station enabling wireless data transfer and wireless battery charging will be developed and tested in this project so that autonomous operations can be performed for extended periods with no human intervention. Ultimately, REDRA is paving the way toward costs effective permanent underwater inspection so that all actors (e.g. fish farmers, marine rescue and research, environmental organisations, etc) may benefit from the technology developed in this project.
