By implementing the Norwegian standard NS 9415 (2003) the number of fish escapes relative to the increased amount of farmed fish has been reduced. The technical standard gives requirements for dimensioning and operations of Norwegian fish farms, but is written in a time where most fish farms where located in in-shore areas. The fish farms are now moving to more exposed sites because there is a need for bigger sites with better sustainability -and the aim for our project is to develop better tools that secure the technical integrity in fish farms operating at these sites. Tools for planning, analyzing and dimensioning fish farms are not optimal for high energy sites. They have been developed and tested for ins- shore sites, and we see that there is a need for better tools when dimensioning a farm for exposed areas. In our project we will look to the offshore oil industry for knowledge and tools that can be transfered to the fish farm industry and we will also develop methods for better planning of operations during the operational period based on weather stastistics and other factors. We will also in this project develop systems for noifying personell if there should be a technical failure or other critical (technical) incidents during the operational period of the fish farm.
