SEPIAMETA is a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia funded research project focused on the metabolism of the European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758). It intends to understand the protein and carbohydrate metabolism on this invertebrate species based on new knowledge regarding enzyme characterization and quantification during digestion and identification of possible metabolic pathways through the use of radio tracers during its different life stages. This project results from a joint venture of two Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) groups: The Fisheries Biology and Hydroecology Research Group (FBHRG) and the Aquaculture Group (AQUAGROUP). Data generated in the present project will provide a basis for the design of a prepared diet that will allow the intensification of cuttlefish aquaculture. The main objective of this project is to progress on the knowledge of the European cuttlefish metabolism. The secondary objectives are: (1) To determine the nutritional and energy content of grass shrimp; (2) To identify enzyme activity during digestion; (3) To establish possible metabolic pathways.
