The background for this R&D program was that the Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Fund (FHF) had a desire to implement a research program where one would work with different aspects of the escape problem. Escape is negative for the industry as a whole and for the individual company that loses fish. It was especially important for FHF to focus on the most important causes of escapes as they are expressed in escape statistics. SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture (SFH) was commissioned to lead the program and to make significant contributions in the implementation of the projects. “Development of safe fish farms” was phase 1 of the program, which is also known as “FHF's escape program”, was implemented in 2006–2007 ( FHF project 543024). FHF's action plans for 2008 and 2009 assume that escape prevention will continue to be the main priority among FHF's objectives for special environmental measures. Therefore, the program will be continued with a phase 2 with a duration of 2010. Phase 2 will place the main emphasis on improving lifting operations with nets, net constructions and fastening devices. This includes the development of methodology and functionality based on location (power, etc.), icing, improvement of critical components and routines for the operation of facilities.
