The present proposal describes the establishment of a National Consortium in fish genomics (FishGen). The main partners in the FishGen are; Institute of Marine Research (IMR), University of Bergen (UoB), National institute of nutrition and seafood research (NIFES), University of Tromsø (UiTø), Norwegian Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (NIFAR) and University of life sciences (UMB). FishGen will address important biological questions with relevance to fish farming and management of wild fish stocks by; a) establishing a National genomic infrastructure/shared resources for cod, b) specific biological projects contributing to the shared resources, and utilising functional genomic tools to study both cod and salmon. The shared resources (infrastructure) on cod are located at 4 different institutions (IMR, NIFAR, UoB, UMB). The specific biological projects covers different life stages and important processes such as early development, reproduction, immunology, breeding and nutrio-toxiogenomics. The FishGen consortium will actively collaborate with several FUGE platforms including CIGENE, NMC, PROBE, Norstruct, zeebrafish (SARS) and bioinformatics platform. In addition to a range of international scientific collaborators, FishGen has several partners from the fish farming industry.
