Summary MarineTT is premised on the concept that knowledge is a major source of competitive advantage in business. Much potentially valuable knowledge, locked into inaccessible or non-user-friendly contexts, is unused because key stakeholders are not aware of its existence. MarineTT is concerned with marine environment research, an approach allowing coverage of other themes (climate change, biodiversity, earth observation and urban development) while also allowing important sub-topics (such as fisheries and aquaculture) to be included, given their relevance to the key area of the impacts of economic growth leading to environmental degradation, and the current ecosystem management approach supported by the EC. MarineTT will use the existing EurOcean info-base of European marine research funded projects as its initial basis, extending its functionality by introducing critical missing fields, making it a more efficient tool, focusing on knowledge outputs rather than a simple listing of research projects. The profiles will be updated to include new fields, such as: stated aims and objectives vs. actual outputs, research performers, research outcomes, research methodologies (effective and/or ineffective), products, and other relevant information. This knowledge can then be discharged through encouraging and accelerating commercial application of research results, through facilitating the transfer of knowledge for policy and senior decision makers, and through the promotion of research results to the public at large. MarineTT will make a real contribution to the call for improved access to EU research results for industry, multipliers, the civil society, and policy-makers. The project is divided into three phases: (1) Collect and Understand, refining and improving databases and info-bases; (2) Analyse (cost & benefit) and Consult, with key stakeholders and experts; and (3) Transfer and Connect; effective knowledge transfer.
The aim of knowledge management, as a science, is to capture, organise and make widely available all the knowledge the consortium possesses, whether explicit (i.e. in recorded form, documented) or tacit (i.e. in people's heads, understood but not formally documented or verbalised). By the completion of the proposed two year project, MarineTT aims to do the following in respect to the marine environment; (1) To obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the knowledge generated from projects by reviewing the research outcomes with a view to identifying what knowledge can be transferred for exploitation. To achieve this, the partnership will engage with principal researchers and coordinators of past projects and define state of the art developments. The reorganised data collection will be used to improve the quality of the existing EurOcean internet portal by focusing on the availability of potential knowledge rather than the existence of projects; (2) To unlock the potential of knowledge by developing and trialling an innovative evaluation mechanism to identify those research activities with the most promise for technology transfer, training & education, policy making, or further research. The mechanism will effectively assess the value of carrying out the process of knowledge transfer; (3) To connect and transfer knowledge to key stakeholders, customising communication methods to end-user needs, and making best use of cost-effective channels for communication. This will be the final stage in the process where knowledge will be customised to end users and delivered using a variety of standard and innovative pathways.
