Mercury contamination in the marine environment is not a new problem. Contamination occurs mainly in highly industrialized regions. Mercury that reaches the water is transformed by bacteria into the highly toxic derivative methylmercury, which is dangerous to both humans and animals. Attention has been focused on the Baltic flounder (Platichthys flesus) in the search for a simple, economic method to monitor methylmercury environmental contamination in the southern Baltic.
