The project was designed to prepare the national Economic and Social Analysis (ESA) on the basis of the existing data and to propose a method for the description of the costs of degradation. Data was compiled for the following aspects (statistical key figures): 1. Status Quo: Proportion of the gross value added, net profits of sectors, persons employed, amount of extracted raw material, amount of fish caught, amount of energy produced, description of the distribution network (oil, gas, energy); 2. Perspectives for development: Important drivers of development: Rising international trade, increasing industrial production, rising demand for energy and raw materials – perspective/reference year: 2020; 3. Aspects of spatial planning: Threats for the marine environment – relevant negative effects of the uses on the marine environment; 4. Competition of uses. Data were collected and compiled for the following uses: 1. Direct uses: Transport (including shipping and construction), Offshore technology (offshore wind, oil and gas, sand and gravel extraction, pipelines, interconnectors), Fisheries, Tourism; 2. Indirect uses: The sea as a “sink”: Depositions from industry and agriculture, other uses (municipal waste water); 3. Other activities with relation to the sea: Coastal protection, Research and development, education, Defence (Military)
