Survival in salmon pairs that are close to smoltification and detailed movement patterns in pairs and smolts released in the autumn have, as far as is known, not been investigated. Since escape from land-based hatcheries also takes place outside the natural smolt window, there will thus be a need for knowledge about survival and migration in pairs / smolts that escape in the autumn (ie autumn smolts). Increased knowledge about spreading and migration after escape from land-based hatcheries can be used to predict any negative effects caused by escaped smolt. Such knowledge will also be important in reducing the extent of escapes through recapture of escaped fish." Goal: to investigate the survival and spread of pairs and smolts from a land-based hatchery (Follasmolt) after simulated escape in the autumn. This will be done by tagging pairs and smolts in the autumn with acoustic tags and mapping if and when these will migrate up into the rivers in the area around the hatchery, as well as examining immediate spatial and temporary spread after escape to assess possibilities for recapture.
