The Baltic Sea has been exposed to an extensive use of chemicals since the beginning of industrialization and its marine environment has a long history of contamination. Thus the Baltic Sea has often been referred to as the most polluted sea in the world. A large variety of different substances exceed the threshold levels set by different organizations and countries. Many of these substances are accumulating in the marine food chain and may cause risks for wildlife, as well as for humans when consumed in food. The FOODWEB project raises public awareness about the links between food quality and its origin. The focus of the project is on the Baltic Sea and its surroundings. The projects clarifies and interprets the two-way relationship between people, food and the environment, in terms of how the state of the environment impacts on our food and safety, but also how human activities impact on the environment. Through a research collaboration, the partners provide data sources for public use. The project results in new tools to combine and interpret environmental impacts and environmentally based risks to food consumers. To increase knowledge about environmental issues among consumers.
