Probiotics will be established to effectively improve feeding and increase health management in turbot production in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS). Thereby, better growth performance and increased immune status is achieved, ultimately assuring improved health and production of RAS-based production. In several fish species, species-specific probiotica have been used to successfully improve digestion, improve immune status and provide prophylactic effects. Increased stress resistence, both acute and chronic, has been reported. Candidate probiotics will be isolated from the digestive system of turbot. Candidates will be screened in vitro for antagonistic effects and based on the results selected for further in vivo experiments on the benefit on growth performance, stress resistence and health. Thereby, a probiotic feed ingredient for turbot aquaculture in RAS is targeted.
